‘And now, O Israel, give heed to the statutes and the ordinances which I teach you, and do them; that you may live …’ These are the opening words of our Old Testament reading today. There is a direct connection between obedience and life. ‘Choose life’, the Lord says elsewhere. St Benedict in the Prologue to the Holy Rule says: ‘that by the labour of obedience thou mayest return to him from whom thou hast strayed by the sloth of disobedience’. Ordinarily, the will of God is revealed in the smallest circumstances of every day, and in the word of the Superior, understood in the Holy Rule to be the representative of Christ in the monastery. May God bless you in your own way of following His holy will, and be close to you this day.
