It is interesting to note the expression on the face of today’s saint in all the icons that represent him. He is unfailingly mild, his gaze fixed on the light beyond. There is not a trace of violence in his face even as he slays the dragon. His bearing displays a unique combination of humility and strength. The hand of God inclines towards him in blessing.
As we pray for our country today, we pray for peace, and for a recovery of the religious spirit which once characterised this land – the land of Aidan, Bede and Cuthbert, and countless others.
May St George pray for us, and may God bless you this day.
