‘Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst’. These words from today’s Gospel reading are one of the great ‘I AM’ sayings of our Lord.

To go alongside these words, here is a song from the Apocalypse: ‘Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night within his temple; and he who sits upon the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes’.

This song belongs to ‘what shall be in the end, and shall not end’, to quote St Augustine, but our Lord’s promise means that we have a foretaste of that even now, in the Holy Eucharist. May we treasure this gift, and have always a great reverence for this most holy Sacrament. May God bless you this day.
