Today is also the Optional Memoria of St Oliver Plunkett, Bishop and Martyr. Ordained priest in 1694, he was appointed Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland in 1669. For much of his time as a bishop, he was in hiding, but nevertheless manged to work tirelessly to strengthen the Irish Church. He was eventually arrested, and taken to England where he was martyred at Tyburn on this day in 1681. He was the last Catholic Martyr to die in England and, at his canonisation in 1975, the first new Irish saint for nearly seven hundred years.
May he pray for us, and for all who face persecution for their faith in our own day. May God bless you.
