‘Blessed may you be, my Lord Jesus Christ. For our salvation you allowed your side and heart to be pierced with a lance and from that side water and your precious blood flowed out abundantly for our redemption’.
This is one of the prayers of the fourteenth century St Bridget or Birgitta of Sweden. Married to Ulf Gudransson, she was left a widow while still in her forties. She went on to found a religious order and her daughter, St Catherine of Sweden, is also widely venerated.
We rejoice in the presence of Bridgettine Sisters down the hill from us at the Maryvale Institute, and we pray for them on their special day. May God bless you.
