‘And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal. And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics”’.

This extract is from our Gospel reading for today. It is very similar to the prescriptions for living out monastic life, which is after all a full self-giving to God, to live by the Gospel. We too ‘take nothing for our journey’ – all the inessentials are stripped away sooner or later, in order that the seeking of God may proceed without hindrance. The hindrances are often interior rather than exterior, though these externals can also be very real.

As we continue our spiritual journey, let us pray that we will be freed from all that holds us back, and may God bless us all this day.
