From today’s Old Testament reading: ‘The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor, the oracle of the man whose eye is opened, the oracle of him who hears the words of God, and knows the knowledge of the Most High, who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down, but having his eyes uncovered: I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not nigh: a star shall come forth out of Jacob, and a sceptre shall rise out of Israel’.
Balaam is the prophet who has an open eye – he watches, keeps vigil, sees the vision of God even in his flesh. It is because of his purity that he can bear this sight and not be destroyed by it.
Balaam foretells the Incarnation using the metaphors of star and sceptre. As we prepare for His coming, may we too be purified in heart and soul, ready to behold Him in His humility.
May God bless you this day.
