From our Old Testament reading: ‘Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations”’.
Here is a vital moment in the life of the patriarch Abraham: his name change. It comes with the promise of the covenant, marking a new stage in his own life and that of the chosen people of God. In monastic life, too there are often name changes – either a complete change or an additional name. The new name marks the changed relationship.
It is God who calls us by our name, who knows us most intimately and who will never let us go, whatever our circumstances. May He bless you specially today.
