Today is also the Optional Memoria of St Aidan and the Saints of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.

The Irish-born St Aidan came in 635 AD to found his monastery on Lindisfarne. It became an important missionary centre in the north of England, and a place of learning and evangelisation. After St Aidan was consecrated Bishop, he retained Lindisfarne Priory as his main centre. St Bede the Venerable described him as a ‘man of remarkable gentleness, goodness and moderation, zealous for God’. He died on this day in 651.

St Bede’s description could equally have been written of St Benedict! May St Aidan and all the Lindisfarne saints pray for us, and may God bless you this day.
