Today we begin one of the greatest hymns of the liturgy, ‘Vexilla Regis’ – ‘The Royal Banners forward go’. This hymn was written by Venantius Fortunatus (530-609), in honour of a large relic of the True Cross which had been sent to Queen Radegunda, a Thuringian princess who founded the abbey of the Holy Cross at Poitiers.

As we begin our journey to Good Friday and beyond, we gather up all the suffering of our times and place it within the mystery of the Cross, our life and our salvation. May God bless you and walk closely with you in these days.
