From today’s Gospel, from St John: ‘I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me, as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep’.

In a homily of Pope St Gregory the Great, preached in the year 591, we learn: ‘You have heard, dear brothers, the instruction which is addressed to you by the reading of the Gospel; you have also heard the danger that we run. Here indeed is he who is good, not by accidental grace, but by essence, declares, “I am the Good Shepherd.” And giving us the pattern of goodness that we must imitate, he adds: “The Good Shepherd gives his life for his sheep”. He did what he taught us; he showed what he commanded us’.

We pray today for the shepherds of the Church – the Holy Father, the Bishops, and all set in authority over us. May they follow in truth the One who has gone before us. May God bless you this day.
