It was thanks to the openheartedness of Pope St Pius X that the then Anglican Benedictine monks of Caldey Island were received into the full communion of the Catholic Church early in 1913, and were able to continue the monastic life they had begun. Later, in May 1913, Blessed Abbot Columba Marmion took Abbot Aelred Carlyle to Rome, where they had an audience with the Holy Father, whose feast we celebrate today.

St Pius X said of the Eucharist: ‘Holy Communion is the shortest and safest way to heaven’. May he pray for us in all the challenges of our own time, and may God bless you this day.
