From our New Testament reading, from 1 Timothy: ‘But as for you, man of God, shun all this; aim at righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses’.

Here is the hymn ‘Fight the good fight’: Fight the good fight with all thy might; Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy right: lay hold on life, and it shall be / thy joy and crown eternally. / Run the straight race through God’s good grace, lift up thine eyes, and seek his face; life with its way before us lies, Christ is the path, and Christ the prize. / Cast care aside; upon thy Guide; lean, and his mercy will provide; lean, and the trusting soul shall prove, Christ is its life and Christ its love. / Faint not, nor fear, his arms are near; he changeth not, and thou art dear; only believe, and thou shalt see / that Christ is all in all to thee’.

Each of the stanzas contains thoughts of Christ: Christ thy strength, Christ thy right; Christ the path, Christ the prize; Christ its life, Christ its love; Christ all in all to thee.

As St Benedict put it, ‘prefer nothing to the love of Christ’. ‘Nihil amori Christi præponere’. May Christ be the centre of your whole life, and may God bless you this day.
