We may ask why St Cecilia is the patron saint of music. It is said that during her marriage ceremony to the Roman aristocrat Valerian, she heard heavenly music. However, it was to be over a thousand years before she began to be represented in art with a viol or an organ. Interestingly, the British composer Benjamin Britten was born on this day in 1913. St Cecilia is commemorated in the Roman Canon of the Mass, along with other early women martyrs.
May she pray for us, that the music of our hearts may be pleasing to God, and may He bless you this day.
