St Lucy was martyred, probably during the Diocletian persecution, and her body rests in Syracuse, Sicily. Before the Protestant Reformation, there was a devotion to her in this country, and to this day two Churches remain which were dedicated to her before the eighth century. Falling in the darkest time of the year in the northern hemisphere, she is appropriately connected with the theme of light.
May the prayers of St Lucy open the way for the light of Christ to penetrate even to the darkest recesses of our hearts, and may God bless you this day.
