From today’s Gospel, from St Mark: ‘As he landed he saw a great throng, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things’. The account goes on to speak of the feeding of the five thousand. Here it is the compassion of Our Lord that is our focus, and the fact that, before He feeds their bodies, He feeds their souls, by ‘teach[ing] them many things’.

The word used for ‘compassion’ is a very strong, visceral word, meaning to feel something deeply ‘in the inward parts’. Jesus feels this for us too, in all our struggles and sufferings. He does not just feel it, He responds – both materially and spiritually.

May we listen for His quiet, gentle voice guiding us through all our challenges, and may God bless you this day.
