This early Christian Sicilian martyr is one of the women martyrs mentioned in the Roman Canon of the Mass. She prayed: ‘Lord, my Creator, you have ever protected me from the cradle; you have taken me from the love of the world, and given me patience to suffer: receive now my soul’.

Here is the Collect at Mass for today: ‘May the Virgin Martyr Saint Agatha implore your compassion for us, O Lord, we pray, for she found favour with you by the courage of her martyrdom and the merit of her chastity. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

May St Agatha pray for us, in all our own challenges, and may God bless you this day.
