Here is part of today’s Old Testament reading, from Jeremiah. The passage gives us Jeremiah’s prayer, when he discovers that there are plots to take his life: ‘Give heed to me, O Lord, and hearken to my plea. Is evil a recompense for good? Yet they have dug a pit for my life. Remember how I stood before thee to speak good for them, to turn away thy wrath from them’.

Jeremiah clearly prefigures Christ; and this heartfelt prayer is a kind of ‘Gethsemane’ moment in the prophet’s life. Like Christ who followed him, he sought always to carry out the will of God, no matter what the cost, and indeed, his prophetic stance did cost him his life, according to tradition.

May his courage and obedience inspire us in our own life, and may God bless you this day.
