‘I bind unto myself today, the strong name of the Trinity; by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three’. This prayer, which is attributed to St Patrick, was written about the year 433 AD. It is called the ‘breastplate’ because it refers to armour worn when engaging in battle.

In the image below, the gentle expression on the face of the saint belies his strength, and the intensity of the battle against what St Paul called ‘the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places’. This battle is also our own, and it is won through entire trust in God, and through humility and love.

As we fight the battles of our own day, may St Patrick pray for us, and the power and blessing of God be present to us at all times.
