Here is the Second Reading for Mass, from the Apocalypse: ‘Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all therein, saying, “To him who sits upon the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might for ever and ever!” And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshipped’.

The image below, from the Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers Hubert and Jan, shows an altar on which the Lamb of God is standing, with the Fountain of Life in the foreground. The Dove, representing the Holy Spirit, hovers above. The Lamb has a wound in Its breast, from which blood flows forth into a golden chalice. The Cross is positioned to the right of the Lamb. All is worship and praise, and a worthy exposition of the reading for this day. As in worship we join ‘the angels and archangels and the whole company of heaven’, let us station ourselves in spirit with this company and love and praise the One who has given His life for us, and who now reigns in glory. May God bless you this day.
