Some words from today’s Gospel: ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends’.
Many are the saints who have laid their lives down for others. St Maximilian Kolbe comes to mind. Canonised by Pope St John Paul II in 1982, he was a prisoner in Auschwitz in 1941. There, he volunteered to take the place of a man with a wife and children who had been condemned to death, and died by lethal injection on 14 August 1941.
May the saints and martyrs inspire us in our love for others, even unto death, and may God bless you this day.
