Born in the first half of the second century, St Irenaeus is known to have seen and heard the saintly Bishop Polycarp, who in turn had known the Apostle John. So his lineage is illustrious. Ordained a priest of the Church of Lyons, he later became its Bishop. His episcopate was marked by many battles against the heresies of his time, against which he stood firm.

He said: ‘The preaching of the Church truly continues without change and is everywhere the same. It has the testimony of the Prophets and Apostles and all their disciples’. As St Paul had said, ‘One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism’.

In amongst the many pressures of our time to change the nature of the Christian message and faith, St Irenaeus stands out as a beacon of truth. May he pray for us, and may God bless you.
