‘Listen, my son …’ These words sum up key aspects of St Benedict’s way: a spirituality of listening – to God, to the Superior, to the Community, and within our own heart. Then, the word ‘son’ – this implies a family spirit in the Community, where each one truly belongs and is following the Gospel way with others.
On 27 April 2005, Pope Benedict XVI told the crowds assembled for his first General Audience why he had chosen that name. He quoted Chapter 72 of the Holy Rule: ‘Prefer nothing to the love of Christ’. He said: ‘I ask St. Benedict to help us keep Christ firmly at the heart of our lives. May Christ always have pride of place in our thoughts and in all our activities!’
May St Benedict pray for us, that we may have a listening heart, and so keep Christ firmly at the centre of our lives. May God bless you this day.
