Here is today’s Gospel, from St Matthew: ‘While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood outside, asking to speak to him. But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brethren?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brethren! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.”’

Far from being a rejection of Our Lady and the brethren who had come, this is by contrast an inclusive statement, that all who seek and do the will of God, are one family with Jesus and His Father in heaven.

May this be true also of us! Let us pray for one another, that we may always be one of the family of Jesus, and may He bless us all.
