The Lateran Basilica is properly called the Archbasilica of the most Holy Saviour, St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist. It is the Cathedral Church of Rome and is thus the Mother of Catholic Churches everywhere, and was founded in 324.
St John Paul II said on his first visit there as Pope: ‘I wish to kneel down in this place and kiss the threshold of this temple, which has been for so many centuries “the dwelling of God with men”’.
Every church or tiny wayside chapel also functions as the threshold to the Eternal. Let us rejoice in this, and may we find today a place of prayer that will take us to and across this threshold. May God bless you this day.
