St Martin is perhaps best known for the story of the cloak of which, as a soldier, he gave half to a beggar. It is perhaps less well known that he was an important monastic founder, establishing the monastery of Ligugé. When in 371 he was made Bishop of Tours, he founded another monastery close by at Marmoutier, to which he would retire when his duties allowed him.

He said: ‘Lord, if your people need me, I will not refuse the work; Your will be done’. May we make these words our own, and may God bless you this day.
