From our Old Testament reading for today, from Isaiah: ‘Everyone who keeps the sabbath, and does not profane it, and holds fast my covenant — these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer …’

Compare these words from Psalm 43: ‘O send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me,
let them bring me to thy holy hill and to thy dwelling! Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy; and I will praise thee with the lyre, O God, my God’.

In these days of quiet expectation, we look not so much to a mountain, but to the humble cave of Bethlehem, which indeed becomes the ‘mountain’ where God dwells. When the magi see the star, they will rejoice exceedingly with great joy’. May this same joy fill our hearts as we contemplate the mystery of these days, and may God bless you.
