‘O Root of Jesse, which standest for an ensign of the people, before whom kings shall shut their mouths, to whom the Gentiles shall seek: Come and deliver us, and tarry not’.
The Antiphon draws on Isaiah: ‘In that day the root of Jesse shall stand as an ensign to the peoples; him shall the nations seek, and his dwellings shall be glorious’. The phrase ‘root of Jesse’ refers to the lineage of the forthcoming Messiah, of the house of David, son of Jesse. This lineage is found in the Gospels, and is a witness to the incarnation of the Lord, in our human nature.
Let us prepare for this coming, by prayer and by works of charity, and may God bless you this day.
