These two fourth century saints, along with St Gregory of Nyssa, are known as the Cappadocian Fathers. They are best known for their stand against the Arian heresy, and for taking forward the work of St Athanasius in formulating the doctrine of the Trinity. Their spiritual writings are also immensely valuable, and link us profoundly with the Church of the East.

St Gregory of Nazianzen said: ‘As a fish cannot swim without water, and as a bird cannot fly without air, so a Christian cannot advance a single step without Christ’.

May these two saints pray for us, that we may deeply know Christ, and may He bless us all this day.
