Today’s Gospel is about forgiveness. Here are the opening lines: ‘Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven”’.
Forgiveness means a complete letting go of an offence committed by another. It can be a process that lasts years, in some cases. But the Holy Spirit is there, to enable and to give strength and courage.
All of us need this great grace of forgiveness and the Sacrament of Penance is one of the most beautiful of the Sacraments. St Augustine wrote: ‘Were there no forgiveness of sins in the Church, there would be no hope of life to come or eternal liberation. Let us thank God who has given his Church such a gift’.
May you know this grace personally in your own life, and may God bless you this day.
