The simplicity of Fra Angelico’s depiction of the Annunciation belies the greatness of the event. Everything extraneous has been removed; there is only Our Lady, the angel, and the onlooker – which could be you or me. Above, the three arches can be said to represent the Blessed Trinity. Barely visible is a small door on the right, and the shadow behind Mary is cast by the light emanating from the angel Gabriel.

There is a great stillness in the image, into which we are drawn. Mary leans forward, as if leaning into the Lord’s purpose for her. Her body as much as her words express her ‘Fiat’.

Today, may we make our own ‘Fiat’ to God, willing with all our heart what His Heart of Love has for us, and may God bless you this day.
