The image below shows the dedication of the High Altar of Cluny by Pope Urban II in 1095, in the presence of the monastic community. Although the history of Cluny was later characterised by magnificence and opulence, the early vision was of monastic life lived in strict adherence to the Benedictine rule.

St Odo said: ‘If we judged by realities we should give honour not to the rich for the fine clothes that they wear, but to the poor who are the makers of such things’.
