Between the years 1885 and 1887, there was a great persecution of Christians in Uganda. On 3 June 1886, St Charles was martyred along with some companions, and others were killed later on. Some Anglicans were also killed at this time, so that this day is ecumenically kept. The Church in Africa is growing steadily, and it is surely because of the witness of the martyrs, throughout the continent, that has helped to bring this about.

May the African martyrs pray for us, and may God bless you this day.
