Today is also the Optional Memoria of St Alban, Proto-Martyr of England. A citizen of Verulamium, now renamed St Albans in his honour, he lived and died in the third century. He was arrested for having sheltered a priest. Many churches and cathedrals have been named for him.

Today we pray for all those whose Christian convictions bring them into danger of their lives. May St Alban pray for them, and for us, and may God bless you this day.
