In the Old Testament, Michael the Archangel is termed the ‘Great Prince’, the protector of the people of Israel – he is described in this way in the Book of Daniel. His name appears also in the Apocalypse, where he is venerated as the heavenly leader in the battle against evil: ‘Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they were defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven’.

Here is the prayer to St Michael, which you may like to pray as you read this: ‘Holy Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust down into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls’.

May he pray for us, and may God bless you this day.
