On 22 February 1931, Our Lord appeared to Sr Faustina. He wore a white robe and there were red and pale rays emanating from His Heart. He said to her: ‘Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: “Jesus, I trust in You” – in Polish, “Jezu, ufam tobie”. I desire that this image be venerated, first in your chapel, and then throughout the world. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish’.
She recorded the apparitions of our Lord to her at the request of her spiritual director. After her death in 1938, her diaries lay unnoticed, until the Polish Pope, now St John Paul II, asked to see them. He knew them to be genuine apparitions and beatified her on 18 April 1993, canonising her on 30 April 2000. At the same time he instituted the Feast of Divine Mercy on the Sunday after Easter Day.
Today let us make the words of the image ‘Jesus, I trust in You’ our own as we pray them. May St Faustina pray for us, and may the Divine Mercy rest upon us this day.
