Although the legend of the soldier St Martin dividing his cloak is probably the best-known story about him, he is also well known as a monk and hermit.

At the moment of his transition from the life of a soldier, he said: ‘Now let me fight for God. … In the name of the Lord Jesus and protected only by the sign of the cross, without shield or helmet, I shall penetrate the enemy’s ranks and not be afraid’.
