St Peter’s Basilica was originally a humble structure built over the tomb of St Peter, while St Paul’s outside the Walls was built over the place where St Paul was traditionally beheaded. An antiphon for their feast in June reads: ‘How glorious are the apostles of Christ; in life they loved one another; in death they rejoice together for ever’.
As we commemorate the dedication of these two great basilicas, let us give thanks for these two Apostles’ lives and martyrdoms, on which the Church is built. May they pray for us, and may God bless you this day.
