St Andrew Dung-Lac was a convert to Christianity who was later ordained a Catholic priest. Today’s feast commemorates both him and all the Vietnamese martyrs from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. They were canonised by Pope John Paul II, who affirmed the ‘vitality and grandeur of the Vietnamese church, its vigour, its patience, its capacity to face difficulties of all kinds and to proclaim Christ’.
We give thanks too for the faithfulness and integrity of Vietnamese Catholics, especially priests, in our own land, and the gift that they are to us. May St Andrew Dung-Lac pray for us, and may God bless you this day.
