Here is today’s Gospel, from St Luke: ‘He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury; and he saw a poor widow put in two copper coins. And he said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all the living that she had.”’

St Cyril of Alexandria commented: ‘And this further deserves both our regard and admiration: that multitudes were going up to the temple, some of whom were offering fatted oxen; and some sheep; and frankincense, and other things besides, indispensable for the due performance of the sacrifices commanded by the law: but the Saviour’s look was not fixed upon these so much as upon those who were making their offerings to the treasury: on those, that is, who were kind and charitable’.

The widow was among the ‘kind and charitable’, to the point of giving all she had. He saw the innermost truth, reading her heart. May the Saviour find in us that kindness and charity, and may God bless you this day.
