St Ambrose lived from about 339 – 397, serving as Bishop of Milan from 374 until his death. He is famously known for his writing of hymns, which are known as ‘Ambrosian’. He is also held in honour for his direction of Augustine of Hippo, whom he brought to Christianity.

He said: ‘Let your door stand open to receive Him, unlock your soul to Him, offer Him a welcome in your mind, and then you will see the riches of simplicity, the treasures of peace, the joy of grace. Throw wide the gate of your heart, stand before the sun of the everlasting light.

May he pray for us, that Christ may indeed unlock the door of our soul, and bring us healing, blessing and peace.
