The Solemnity of the Epiphany is transferred to tomorrow, Sunday, and so today is an ‘ordinary’ Christmas Feria.

Here is part of our New Testament reading, from 1 John: ‘This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the witness, because the Spirit is the truth. There are three witnesses, the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree’.

St Clement of Alexandria commented: ‘For there are three that bear witness, the spirit, which is life, and the water, which is regeneration and faith, and the blood, which is knowledge; and these three are one. For in the Saviour are those saving virtues, and life itself exists in His own Son’.

As we move towards the great Solemnity of the Epiphany, let us hold these three mysteries in our hearts as we approach the crib with the Magi; and may God bless you in your preparation for this great feast.
