St Nicholas Owen, Jesuit lay brother, was a Master Carpenter who crafted some of the most imaginative priest’s holes in existence, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I when Catholics were severely persecuted. St Nicholas himself was eventually discovered and martyred. Today the hiding places are pilgrimage sites, including Harvington Hall within the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

Today let us pray for victims of religious persecution worldwide, giving thanks for Christians who persevere ‘even until death’; may St Nicholas Owen pray for us, and may God bless you this day.
