From today’s Gospel, from St John: ‘Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”’

St Augustine said: ‘The work then of the pious soul is faith to Christ-ward, and far more excellent the zeal to become wise in the knowledge of Him, than the cleaving to the typical shadows’.

The tomb of St John Henry Newman bears his epitaph, written by himself: ‘Ex umbris et imaginibus in veritatem’ – ‘Out of shadows and images into the truth.’ These words, like Newman’s life, are a fitting commentary on St Augustine’s words.

As we make our own journey of faith ‘from shadows and images into the truth’ may we know the spiritual companionship if those who have walked this way before us; and may God bless you this day.
