From today’s New Testament reading, from the Acts of the Apostles: ‘As they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”’

In a homily, St John Chrysostom said: ‘Why did a cloud receive Him? This too was a sure sign that He went up to Heaven. Not fire, as in the case of Elijah, nor fiery chariot, but a cloud received Him; which was a symbol of Heaven, as the Prophet says; Who makes the clouds His chariot; it is of the Father Himself that this is said. Therefore he says, on a cloud; in the symbol, he would say, of the Divine Power, for no other Power is seen to appear on a cloud. … O what a sight they were granted!’
