St Boniface was a Benedictine monk, whose early life was spent in Devon, but who was martyred in Frisia, where he had gone to evangelise, partly there and partly in Germany. He is shown with the Cross, the sword by which he was martyred, and the Book of the Gospels.

He said: ‘The Church is like a great ship being pounded by the waves of life’s different stresses. Our duty is not to abandon ship, but to keep her on her course’.
