From today’s Old Testament reading, from 1 Kings: ‘And there he [Elijah] came to a cave, and lodged there; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” … And he said, “Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice …’
As the hymn expresses it: ‘Breathe through the heats of our desire, thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire, speak through the earthquake, wind and fire, O still small voice of calm, O still small voice of calm!
Today, let us have frequent recourse to the ‘still, small voice’ within, to listen and act upon what we hear; and may God bless you abundantly.
