From our Old Testament reading, from the Book of Deuteronomy: ‘Only take heed, and keep your soul diligently …’

In the original Hebrew text, the words for ‘take heed’ and ‘keep’ are the same, ‘shamar’. The same word is used in Psalm 121 for ‘The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil’, and ‘the Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in’.

The one is an instruction to us, and the other is an assurance of the Lord’s watchfulness over us. May the Holy Spirit enable us to keep watch over our own soul, even as He keeps us from evil in all the going out and coming in of our lives. May God bless you this day.
