Again, from Colossians, from our first reading: ‘If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hid with Christ in God …’
The Persian sage Aphrahat commented: ‘Let us think upon the things that are above, on the heavenly things, and meditate on them, where Christ has been lifted up and exalted. But let us forsake the world, which is not ours, that we may arrive at the place to which we have been invited. Let us raise up our eyes on high, that we may see the splendour which shall be revealed …’
The Sursum Corda in the Mass bids us lift up our hearts; let us lift also our ‘inner’ eye, the eye of the soul, to gaze upon Him whom we love. Today, may we find the time, and open ourselves to this grace; and may God bless you.
