The icon below showing Michael the Archangel is in the public domain; it comes from Athens, and dates from the fourteenth century.

There are many references to St Michael and the angels in Sacred Scripture, and here is one passage: ‘Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they were defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven …’ (Revelation 12:7-8)

Here is the traditional prayer to St Michael, which you may like to pray on this day: ‘Holy Michael Archangel, defend us in the day of battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust down into hell Satan and all other evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.’

May St Michael and all the Angels be with you and around you on this day; and may God bless you.
